Where the paths stop

Thirty years on, parts of the mountains I walk are still mapped as mine suspect areas. How close did my own tracks come to them, and how much of the marked hiking network around them runs along their edge?

The answer

2 of my 18 walks crossed a mapped suspect area: Cincar from planinarski dom Kruzi and Klekova Glavica – Pašina Planina – Mala Čaba. In all, 3.4 of the 273 km I walked here came within 250 m of one. Of the marked network around my walks, 7 of its 332 km (2%) runs that close, most of it on BH-W-10 Iz Ljute, oko Treskavice, do Kalinovika.

My tracks

The walks that came close

4 walks came within 1.0 km of a mapped suspect area; the other 14 never did. Where a track runs through a polygon, it is as likely to be the tracing as the ground: these outlines were drawn by hand from small-scale maps, and only BHMAC’s own map can say which.

Marked routes

The marked network

50 marked routes pass through these areas, 332 km of path in all. 2 of them come within 250 m of a mapped suspect area; the rest never do. My own walks kept to the marked network for 38% of their length (within 30 m of it); the rest is on paths the network doesn’t mark.

Method

How this was made

The tracks are my GPX files. The marked network is every OpenStreetMap hiking route (route=hiking) inside the areas, counted once per stretch of path where routes share it. The suspect areas are OpenStreetMap polygons tagged hazard=minefield or military=danger_area, most traced from the BHMAC maps EUFOR publishes. Distances are measured every 20 m along each line, on a flat projection that is off by under a percent at this scale. Stretches within 30 m of a public road are left out: the traced outlines often lap over the road beside them, and driving or walking the asphalt there is not walking into one. The OpenStreetMap data was last fetched on 2026-10-05; a new walk on new ground adds its own, and every build measures the walks again.
