Bosnia and Herzegovina counted · Part 03 of 09

Where everyone was in 1991

The 2013 census asked everyone born before 1 April 1991 where they had lived at the 1991 census: the same settlement, elsewhere in Bosnia and Herzegovina, or abroad. It also asked who had been displaced since. The answers map the war’s movements onto today’s municipalities.

The answer

Of 2,636,453 residents old enough to have been counted in 1991, 69% lived in the same settlement then. 302,627, 11%, lived in what is now the other entity or Brčko, and 142,698 lived abroad. 695,463 residents, one in five, said they had been displaced at some point after April 1991.

Residents born before April 1991

Where they lived in 1991

“Same entity” and “other entity” are today’s lines drawn back onto 1991, when there were none: someone who lived in Sarajevo’s Grbavica in 1991 and in Istočno Sarajevo in 2013 moved a few kilometres and is counted as coming from the other entity. Of those who lived abroad in 1991, a third lived in Croatia; most of the rest lived in Serbia, Slovenia or further away.

  • Same settlement 69.1%
  • Same municipality 6.6%
  • Same entity 6.8%
  • Other entity or Brčko 11.5%
  • Abroad 5.4%
  • Unknown 0.6%

Municipality by municipality

Who came from across the line

The share of residents born before April 1991 who lived in the other entity then is highest in the municipalities that were built, after Dayton, out of the edges of pre-war ones: the Sarajevo suburbs on the RS side, Istočni Mostar, Istočni Drvar. It is over a third in Pale, Višegrad and Bijeljina too. Switch the layer to see who stayed put and who was displaced.
