Bosnia and Herzegovina counted · Part 06 of 09

The villages that are emptying

Every settlement on the census list was visited, including the ones where the enumerator found nobody. The settlement tables give each of them its residents by age, so a village’s future can be read off a single row.

The answer

Of 6,141 settlements, 542 had no residents at all in 2013. Of the 5,599 that did, 891 had no child under 15, and in 502 at least half the residents were 65 or older. The villages without children are 16% of the inhabited settlements, but they held only 11,178 people, 0.3% of the country.

Settlements per municipality

Where the small and empty villages are

Each unit shaded by its settlements: how many are empty, how many have fewer than a hundred people, and the size of a typical one. The small and empty villages gather in the same places as the old ones in Part 05: the western highlands, eastern Herzegovina and the mountains around Sarajevo, and along the Drina.

Share of settlements with fewer than 100 residents, or none. Point at a municipality.

The oldest and the youngest villages

Settlements of fewer than 50 people are left out, where one household sets the average. Even so, the oldest villages have an average age in the mid-sixties: most of their residents are past retirement, and few are left to replace them.
